🔤 Taxonomy
Sistrurus miliarius is the accepted species name. Three subspecies are widely recognized: S. m. miliarius, S. m. barbouri and S. m. streckeri. Older combinations include Crotalus miliarius and Caudisona miliaria. The tiny rattle can be difficult to hear and is never a safety device.
📌 Description
Pygmy Rattlesnake is a compact, heavy-bodied venomous snake, normally 35–65 cm long. Well-managed individuals may live 12–20 years. Its small size does not reduce the need for institutional controls: envenomation is medically significant, strike distance is easy to underestimate and routine free handling is unacceptable.
This guide is for licensed professional collections and trained specialist teams. It is not an acquisition guide. The facility needs legal approval, double containment, protected-contact procedures, competent backup and a written route to emergency medical care before an animal arrives.

☠️ Venom
This species is venomous. Venom exposure can cause pain, swelling or other systemic effects, and severity varies with species, locality, bite site and the amount delivered. A small wound or apparently dry bite is not proof of safety; every bite or sting requires urgent medical assessment.
If an incident occurs, move away, call emergency services or a poison centre, keep the patient still, remove rings and other constricting items, and follow dispatcher instructions. Do not use a tourniquet, cut or suck the wound, apply ice or electricity, give alcohol or medicines as a home treatment, or attempt to catch the animal. Antivenom choice and dosing are hospital decisions; verify the relevant product and local availability in advance. 🌍 Distribution
The accepted range comprises the southeastern United States, from eastern Texas and Oklahoma through the lower Mississippi basin to the Carolinas and Florida. pine flatwoods, wet prairie, palmetto scrub, sandhill, floodplain and open woodland. The three recognized subspecies occupy different moisture and winter regimes, so a Florida animal must not be cycled like stock from Missouri.
A country-level map cannot show fragmented colonies, subspecies limits or protected sites. It must not be used to locate animals, justify collecting, or infer that every highlighted area is occupied.

⚖️ Legal status
Status checked 4 September 2026: The species is not CITES-listed. The genus Sistrurus is in EU Annex D under Regulation (EU) 2026/1383, so current EU import-reporting rules apply. U.S. federal status does not replace state and local law: native-snake collection, venomous-animal possession, transport and sale rules vary across the range and may protect individual subspecies or populations.
Dangerous-animal, zoo, occupational-safety, transport and local planning rules can apply in addition to wildlife law. Obtain written advice from each competent authority before any transfer. Retain invoices, breeder identity, parentage and locality records, import or transfer documents, permits, photographs and the date of every legal check.
The Bern Convention is not relevant to this North American species.
🤌 Husbandry
Use a locked animal room as the second containment barrier. The primary enclosure needs two independent locks, protected vents, sealed cable openings and a shift hide that can be closed from outside the occupied space. Arrange the water bowl and removable fittings behind service access wherever possible. Every opening starts with a visual location check and ends with an animal count and lock check.
No routine task should require touching, pinning or neck restraint. Written procedures should define two-person work, tools, escaped-animal response and who may enter. Before acquisition, coordinate with emergency and poison-information services: identify a receiving hospital, transport route and the medically supervised process for obtaining appropriate antivenom. Antivenom must never be self-administered.
House singly except for a planned, continuously observed breeding introduction. Quarantine arrivals for at least 90 days behind separate containment with dedicated tools, paper substrate, weight, feeding, shedding and faecal records, and veterinary testing appropriate to origin. Wild-caught or undocumented stock brings unacceptable conservation, parasite and legal risk.
💡 Lighting
Provide a seasonal photoperiod within 10–14 hours, bright visible light over the warm zone and complete shade in both hides. Low-output UVB can be offered across part of the enclosure, but the snake must be able to leave it entirely. Guard every lamp and heater; use thermostats, fixed probes and an independent high-temperature alarm.
🌡 Heating and temperature
During the active season, provide a 29–32 °C basking surface, 23–27 °C warm-side air and a 20–23 °C cool retreat. Nights can fall to 18–22 °C. Measure the surface and air at snake level. A gradient matters more than chasing one room-temperature number.
Seasonal cooling is provenance-dependent and principally relevant to managed breeding or long-term institutional programmes. Healthy, established adults may be reduced gradually toward 8–15 °C only after veterinary review, fasting and complete digestion. Do not cool juveniles, new arrivals, underweight, ill or parasite-positive animals. Redundant measurement and a failure alarm are essential.
💧 Humidity and water
Maintain roughly 50–75% relative humidity with ventilation and a localized refuge reaching 70–85% during shedding. Provide fresh water in a stable bowl. Keep the main floor dry enough to prevent scale damage; raise local moisture rather than saturating the whole enclosure.
Repeated retained shed, prolonged soaking or unusually concentrated urates call for review of hydration, ventilation and temperature. Damp, cool, stagnant housing predisposes to skin and respiratory disease.
🌿 Enclosure and decoration
Provide at least 90 × 45 × 45 cm for one adult. Use 7–12 cm of compactable pesticide-free soil mixed with washed sand and leaf litter; paper is preferable during quarantine. Anchor every stone, cork slab and branch directly to the enclosure floor so nothing can shift or conceal the animal during service.
Include tight warm and cool hides, dense visual cover, an open basking patch and the externally operated shift hide. Avoid aromatic wood, sharp chips, adhesive tape, unstable rock piles and inaccessible cavities. The layout must allow staff to locate the entire snake before a service hatch is opened.
🪳 Feeding
Offer appropriately sized frozen-thawed rodents, generally every 7–14 days, with juveniles at the shorter end and established adults at the longer end. Use body condition, seasonal activity and reproductive state rather than a fixed calendar. Whole vertebrate prey needs no routine supplements.
Feed with long tools through protected access and shift the snake before retrieving refused food. Never leave a live rodent with it. Regurgitation, repeated refusal outside a normal seasonal change or progressive weight loss warrants veterinary investigation rather than forced feeding.
💤 Winter rest
Cooling is not a default display requirement. Where a documented locality and programme justify it, reduce food first, maintain normal warmth until the gut is clear, then lower light and temperature gradually. Continue clean water and remote observation. Rewarm gradually and stop the cycle if weight loss, respiratory signs or abnormal posture develops.
🥚 Breeding
The species is viviparous, with reported litters broadly within 2–12 young. Pair only mature animals with compatible documented origin and lawful placements for all offspring. Introductions need remote observation and a separation plan. Every neonate is venomous at birth and requires its own secure, labelled housing before mating occurs.
Avoid hybridizing localities or subspecies. Reproductive output never justifies taking founders from the wild, and conservation-sensitive lineages should be managed under a coordinated programme rather than casual private production.
🩺 Common problems
Important captive problems include obesity or undernutrition, dysecdysis, respiratory infection, thermal burns, rostral trauma, mouth disease, internal parasites and injury from unstable furnishings. Females can develop dystocia or lose dangerous amounts of condition. Watch remotely for wheezing, discharge, open-mouth breathing, swelling, incomplete shed, abnormal posture, repeated soaking, regurgitation or sustained weight change.
Do not attempt a manual examination or home treatment. Contact a veterinarian whose facility, staff and legal arrangements can safely receive a medically significant venomous snake. A suspected bite is an emergency even if fang marks, pain or swelling are initially slight.
📌 Conclusion
Sistrurus miliarius belongs only in a lawful specialist programme with documented captive origin, double containment and coordinated medical planning. The most common planning error is treating compact size as reduced risk; the enclosure, staffing and legal standard must equal that used for larger venomous snakes.
