Pallid Sun Cockroach

🔤 Taxonomy

Hemithyrsocera palliata (Fabricius, 1798) is the accepted scientific name. Older combinations and synonyms include Blatta palliata, Thyrsocera nigra, Ellipsidium subcinctum, Ectobia indica, and Phyllodromia fuliginosa.

Pallid sun cockroach is the most useful hobby name. Do not confuse it with the larger, more demanding striped sun cockroach, H. vittata.

📌 Description

Adults are slender, fully winged cockroaches about 1.1-1.5 cm long, dark brown with cream-yellow margins. Nymph colors change between molts. The species is unusually visible by day, moves rapidly, climbs clean glass and plastic, and adults can fly.

It breeds readily when warm, humid air is combined with real ventilation. Containment, not feeding, is the main routine challenge.

🌍 Distribution

Records place the species widely across tropical South and Southeast Asia, from the Indian subcontinent through southern China, mainland Southeast Asia, Malaysia, Singapore, and western Indonesia. It occupies warm leaf litter and low vegetation; country-level records do not define a single uniform habitat.

⚖️ Legal status

Checked on 2026-08-22: H. palliata is not CITES-listed, no entry was found in current EU Annexes A-D, and it is not a Bern Convention species. Import and movement of live tropical cockroaches can still fall under national plant-health, biosecurity, exotic-animal, shipping, or tenancy rules.

Keep invoices, breeder and line information, and import or transfer papers. Never release animals, oothecae, plants, or substrate. Seal or freeze enclosure waste before disposal where local law permits.

🤌 Husbandry

Use at least 30 × 20 × 30 cm for a starter colony, with a gasket lid and very fine vents fixed on every edge. Provide more usable bark and leaf surface than empty height. Make feeding ports small and open the enclosure only inside a catch tub.

Quarantine additions for 60 days with separate tools. Do not mix H. palliata and H. vittata: the youngest stages are easy to lose in a mixed enclosure, and locality or species identity is then compromised.

💡 Lighting

UVB is unnecessary, but a 10-12-hour light cycle supports the species’ daytime display behavior. Use diffuse light and shaded retreats; intense lamps overheat the upper bark and dry exposed oothecae.

🌡 Heating and temperature

Maintain 24-29°C, with a small 27-29°C area and a 22-25°C retreat. Nights may fall to 21-24°C. Below about 24°C reproduction slows; sustained temperatures over 30°C sharply reduce the margin for dehydration.

Warm one side or the room under thermostat control. Check temperature among the upper hides as well as at substrate level.

💧 Humidity and water

Aim for 70-85% RH while moving air through the enclosure. Keep the lower substrate and some moss lightly moist, with upper bark able to dry between mistings. Stagnant saturated air can kill adults even when the hygrometer looks correct.

Use fruit and vegetables for part of hydration and add a tiny textured dish or insect-safe water source. Protect 1-2 mm hatchlings from open water.

🌿 Enclosure and decoration

Provide 3-5 cm of coir or pesticide-free soil mixed with leaves. Arrange several thin cork pieces diagonally and vertically, and add loose leaf litter and fine twigs. Plants can increase surface area, but use only established pesticide-free plants and seal all lid gaps around stems.

Avoid coarse mesh, loose foam, aromatic wood, waterlogged moss, and oversized decor that makes inspection impossible. Replace climbing barriers before they become dusty.

🪳 Feeding

Offer artificial pollen or bee-pollen substitute, fine balanced roach diet, fish flakes, and small portions of banana, apple, pear, mango, carrot, or squash. Fruit and pollen are strongly accepted, but a sugary diet alone is incomplete.

Feed at several elevated and ground-level points every one to two days. Remove fruit before fermentation and keep dry food available in tiny quantities so hatchlings find it without crossing the whole enclosure.

🥚 Breeding

Females deposit oothecae in protected humid crevices. At 24-29°C, hobby cultures commonly hatch them in roughly 30-60 days; published species-specific life-history data remain limited. Nymphal development may take around six months, with adults living several more months.

Do not peel sound oothecae from bark. Maintain overlapping generations, stable airflow, and frequent small foods. A colony can appear adult-heavy immediately before a large hatch.

🩺 Common problems

• Sudden adult losses: high humidity without ventilation is the first parameter to check.
• No hatchlings: inspect ootheca moisture, heat stability, fine-food access, and whether first instars are escaping.
• Mold and mites: reduce fruit portions and remove residues daily.
• Failed molts: keep a moist refuge and undisturbed textured surfaces.
• Allergy: cockroach debris can sensitize keepers; damp-clean and use gloves and suitable respiratory protection.

📌 Conclusion

The pallid sun cockroach makes an excellent daylight display for a keeper willing to build at millimeter scale. A fine, ventilated lid and many accessible feeding surfaces matter more than a large decorative volume.
